Open Letter to Terry in Georgia The recipient asked for anonymity, but I thought the letter offered important perspectives about Heaven to Earth, I Ching. (The name/location was changed.) First, he is the first person to order the book via the website! Since 1983, I've sold and distributed (given) previous versions of this material during readings, classes, and workshops. While writing and presentation evolves, the material is time tested. What changed? R.L. Wing granted permission to use text to publish the hexagrams in the Change Cycle. Click here for an example page in PDF (use two-page layout). This arrangement of hexagrams does not alter the traditional meaning of hexagrams, but provides deep insights into its particular function. The Change Cycle adds more dimensions to reading. Also, this arrangement works with any translation of the I Ching. The Wing text is the best as it readily shows the natural compatibility of the Change Cycle with hexagram text. Why is this arrangement important? Historically, hexagrams are ordered in the King Wen arrangement as traditional pairs of complementary opposites. In contrast, the Change Cycle sets the 64 I Ching hexagrams in an organic fashion from the all solid line Heaven Creative hexagram to all broken line Earth Receptive hexagram. This cyclic, sequential order is used in a reading to order hexagrams you created by a toss of coins, for example. Read the changing or active lines to further meditate apply its meaning to your question. Why tinker with this ancient manuscript? The meaning of a hexagram has not altered, but its role in representing your question and situation has changed. The Change Cycle is nearly a thousand years old, yet it introduces the modern element of time to a reading by setting events in order as they temporally occur. When you know where you are in the flow of events, the better you can prepare to make effective, positive change. This is a profound difference in the way the I Ching has historically performed. Interestingly, the roots of this revolutionary change is found in the very hexagrams themselves. This paradigm shift is referred to in the letter. It has been termed revolutionary in its scope, yet rests on the very foundation of the I Ching. The "proof" for this shift can be found in the Correlation Sheet discussed in Chapter Seven. What is most important is that the Change Cycle works with any I Ching interpretation you may have on the shelf. However, with Heaven to Earth, I Ching your reading's change cycle is easily followed when the hexagrams are already presented in the Change Cycle. |
