Two Active Lines in Return -To Close There were two active lines in the example primary hexagram of 58c Return 24t. The first line and fifth line are both active positions. When you redraw lines to change polarity from solid-Yang to broke yin and from broken-Yin to solid yang they are active. This change creates new hexagrams that are associated with each other. Notice below how Heaven to Earth, I Ching shows the associated hexagram for the first active line as 64c Receptive 2t. This is a unique and crucial feature. The fifth active line is shown next. Also notice the reminder on the far right that states: If number C above is larger than associate “c” number, the C results from “c.” C follows “c.” If C above is smaller than associate “c,” the C leads to, or comes before “c.” In the example 58c Return 24t, the hexagram of 64c Receptive 2t follows the hexagram of 58c Return. Thus, 58c Return has a smaller Change Cycle number and leads to 64c Receptive. This is not true in the active five line. The associate hexagram is 51c Difficult Beginnings with a smaller Change Cycle number than 58c Return. Thus, 51c Difficult Beginnings comes before 58c Return. Important: Read active line text in primary and secondary hexagrams. Hexagram text sets the tenor for the specific action shown by active line text. As time changes, so does the counsel of the I Ching using the Heaven to Earth principles. This increases your awareness of your surroundings and opportunities to make positive changes. One other point. You will discover some lines are governing or constituting rulers. The Wilhelm-Baynes I Ching describes them on pages 364-5. Governing rulers are "always of good character and become rulers by virtue of their positions and the meaning of the time." Whereas, constituting rulers "gives the hexagram its characteristic meaning, regardless of whether or not the line indicates nobility and goodness of character." The Heaven to Earth, I Ching format makes it easy to follow active lines as they change through your cycle. As you review your active lines in the change cycle, bend the right pages to easily read active line text in your change cycle. Section Two: The 64 I Ching Hexagrams
